A stepped return in clay block added to the rear of an in situ concrete terrace house. A courtyard, a kitchen and dining room. Self-build with direct labour and local trades.
The primary geometric order of square rooms is continued. Large apertures over scale to counter blind party walls. Materials are selected for efficiency, the criteria; to be as large and light as possible. Clay block, timber and glass – a lightweight superstructure a top a highly insulated concrete base.
Site and the situation signify a house of sorts, economics as structure as space as politic as ornament.
